Synology usage series 6 – Securing Squid and Socks5 connection over SSH, using Bitvise Tunnelier


Testing Secured Squid Connection

1. Apply squid’s configuration to Firefox
2. Run Tunnelier
3. Load Squid profile
4. Click ‘Login’ button
5. Look at the message box, if no error messages, then the tunnel connection to the DS207+ ssh server is success.
6. OH WOW! The connection to squid is now encrypted.

Testing Secured Socks 5 Connection

1. Apply Socks’s configuration to Firefox
2. Run Tunnelier
3. Load Socks 5 profile
4. Click ‘Login’ button
5. Look at the message box, if no error messages, then the tunnel connection to the DS207+ ssh server is success.
6. OH WOW again! The connection to nylon is now encrypted.

P.S. It is advised to let socks server query the dns in order to prevent dns hijacked by the firewall.

For firefox, type about:config in address bar

set network.proxy.socks_remote_dns to true.
